League of Legends Classic Just Got Its Release Date And Major New Details At MSI 2026

League of Legends, developed and published by Riot Games, is about to bring back an entire chapter of its history to shake up its longtime community. The Californian studio used the ultimate stage of its esports year to spill the beans. This exclusive reveal covers a nostalgic mode the veterans have been waiting on for years.

Riot Games Takes The Esports Stage To Drop The Bombshell

The announcement dropped during the grand final of MSI 2026 held in Daejeon, South Korea on July 11, 2026. That epic showdown saw Hanwha Life Esports edge out Bilibili Gaming on a nail-biting 3 games to 2 scoreline. Riot Games then rolled out a fresh trailer during the closing ceremony of the event. Executive producer Paul « Riot Pabro » Bellezza personally confirmed the mode’s technical details straight from the main stage.

League of Legends Classic officially drops on July 29, 2026 at 3:00 PM UTC with Patch 26.15 of the game. Unlike World of Warcraft Classic, Riot Games did not go the separate client route for this nostalgic mode. The new mode instead slots directly into the existing League of Legends client as a dedicated game queue. The trailer racked up several million views on social media within hours with massive relays from pro players of the LCK and LEC circuits. The studio also confirmed a special showmatch featuring old NA LCS legends to hit the older veterans.

A Faithful Throwback To The Golden Season 3 Era

League of Legends Classic builds on the foundation of Season 3 launched in 2013 with carefully cherry-picked elements from seasons 1 to 4. The mode brings back the original Summoner’s Rift with its green terrain, no alcoves and the old jungle layout. Veterans will also rediscover the old runes and masteries systems gone since the 2017 overhaul. The Influence Points system replaces Blue Essence as the mode’s core currency.

The launch ships with a starting roster of 60 champions anchored by the 40 original champions from 2009. These characters return to their pre-rework kits from before the major redesigns, notably Skarner, Sion and Gangplank. The mode’s development started as an internal project called Thunderdome later picked up by Norak, the developer behind the fan project Chronoshift. Iconic items like the Oracle’s Elixir, Sightstone and Vision Ward also make their comeback to the shop. A second wave of champions will land later with Akali, Caitlyn, Fiora, Graves, Irelia, LeBlanc, Mordekaiser and Urgot to round out the full roster.

The mode also packs its own Ranked, Normal and Co-Op vs AI queues on top of custom games available right at launch. A dedicated battle pass and a token system are also confirmed through recent datamining on the test servers. The champion select voting mechanic from that era also comes back to nail the old party atmosphere. Some modern quality-of-life improvements still get to stay like the optimized matchmaking and the party finder interface. This hybrid approach keeps the authentic nostalgia while dodging the friction points that would feel unbearable by today’s standards.

Patch 26.15 Marks A Major Strategic Pivot For Riot Games

Slotting League of Legends Classic straight into Patch 26.15 signals a bold editorial call from the Californian studio. Riot Games thus answers years of repeated demands from its community begging for a comeback of the original mechanics. The Chronoshift project had already proven that latent demand by pulling in thousands of players on its unofficial server. By officially adopting this fan project rather than fighting it legally, the studio takes an unprecedented stance in its recent history. Patch 26.15 becomes the vehicle of a fresh dialogue with the veterans who drifted away over the years toward competing MOBAs.

This approach through a simple patch also spares the studio the pitfalls of a separate client expensive to maintain long term. The nostalgia pivot also lands in a fierce competitive context against Dota 2 from Valve and the emerging new MOBAs on the global market. Riot Games thus reclaims the narrative of its brand by riding on the goodwill built over its 17 years of existence. The studio could also replicate this model for other historical modes like Dominion or the old rotating maps gone from the client. Patch 26.15 actually cracks the door open to a massive reactivation strategy that cements League of Legends as a lasting pillar of the global esports industry.
