Before Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter and Sly Cooper, there were Spyro and Crash Bandicoot. The PS1’s two flagship mascots never got their official crossover. An indie developer has just fixed that injustice with a free co-op game available on PC right now.
Insomniac Games with Spyro and Naughty Dog with Crash Bandicoot each held their own PS1 trilogy at the end of the ’90s. Both franchises shared the same store shelves, the same TV ads, and the same bedroom shelves of an entire generation of kids. Yet Sony, Activision and Universal never brought the two heroes together in a single game. The dream of a collaboration between the purple dragon and the orange marsupial seemed destined to remain a nostalgia fantasy.
That fantasy almost became reality. A Crash Bandicoot 5 featuring a crossover with Spyro had been considered before being canceled mid-development. Images of that scrapped project surfaced not long ago. In 2026, it’s an indie developer who finally pulled off what the professional studios never did.
The project is called Sprash. It comes from qtderg and Bunbaroness, indie developers who built the Spaghetti Spyro framework the game runs on, powered by Unreal Engine 5. It’s not a simple port. It’s a full recreation of Spyro: Year of the Dragon in a new engine. The demo covers three levels: Sunrise Spring Home, Sunny Villa and Sheila’s Alp, with high resolutions, smooth framerates and an optional PS1 visual filter.
The game supports up to 4 players simultaneously in co-op. The confirmed playable characters in the demo are Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Coco Bandicoot and a Dark Spyro. Each character comes with their own complementary abilities. Aku Aku, Crash‘s iconic protective mask, makes an appearance with a gem collection mechanic. Items pulled from the Bandicoot universe are woven into Spyro‘s levels. The community is also looking for Unreal Engine developers to implement the skateboarding mechanic from Spyro 3 into the framework.
The game is available for free on PC and doesn’t require any complex installation. Here’s how to get it:
The project is unofficial and not affiliated with Activision, Sony, Insomniac Games or Naughty Dog. It’s distributed for free with no financial strings attached. Grab it while the project is still up.
