Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, developed and published by Ubisoft, drops you into the 18th-century Caribbean at the helm of the Jackdaw with Edward Kenway. Here are our 5 essential beginner tips to nail your first playthrough.
The biggest rookie mistake is running off to loot Cape Bonavista or hit Havana as soon as the world opens up. Push through the main story and focus on unlocking Great Inagua at the end of the 15th main mission called This Old Cove. This island is basically the pivot point that unlocks nearly every core system in the game. Jackdaw upgrades, Templar Hunts and the Kenway’s Fleet all shift into high gear once you reach this key location on the map.
Great Inagua ships with its own upgradeable pirate hideout that maxes out at 3 tiers. Each tier drops game-changing bonuses that make the investment absolutely mandatory. The tier 3 hideout is straight up required to unlock the endgame Jackdaw upgrades later on. The hideout’s general store also stocks rare and legendary weapons plus exclusive outfits for Edward Kenway. Pouring resources into this central hub early massively pays off across the whole rest of the adventure.
The Jackdaw is basically an extension of Edward Kenway himself since the ship handles all Caribbean travel. Ship upgrades unlock during This Tyro Captain in Sequence 3 of the main story. Zeroing in on 2 upgrade categories from the jump is absolutely crucial to hold your own against enemy ships early:
The materials needed for upgrades are mostly wood, metal, and cloth grabbed from raiding merchant ships. Brigs primarily carry metal while Schooners haul mainly wood, rum, and sugar. Any surplus rum and sugar should straight up hit the general store since neither material feeds into Edward‘s gear crafting at all. This conversion into Reales is easily the fastest early money method in the whole game.
The Spyglass is probably the most slept-on tool in all of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced despite carrying massive value. This piece of kit pulls up crucial intel on any ship visible on the horizon before you even engage. Players can eyeball the cargo type, ship level, and overall strength rating in one quick glance. Adéwalé and the rest of the crew also chime in on scanned vessels and warn you outright when the Jackdaw is outclassed by the target.
Systematically pulling out the Spyglass before every fight saves you from tons of frustrating deaths against overpowered targets. Tagging a ship after scanning it also lets you track its position on the map during the whole chase. This makes it super doable to stick to low-threat zones until the Jackdaw is upgraded enough. This methodical approach maxes out loot for the absolute minimum risk taken by beginner players.
Boarding enemy ships is by far the most profitable move in the whole naval combat system early on. This action lets you grab the entire cargo instead of watching part of the haul sink to the bottom of the sea. Players can also fully repair their Jackdaw in the middle of a fight by picking this crucial boarding option. Time freezes during the boarding action too, giving you a solid breather in the middle of chaotic combat.
Boarding drops 3 strategic choices as soon as the enemy ship’s morale is fully broken. These options let you:
The best usable weapons in the whole game unlock as early as Sequence 3 at any general store on the map. The Officer’s Rapiers and Spanish Officer Pistols carry Edward Kenway through the vast majority of the adventure. The combined price tag lands at exactly 21,000 Reales for both key pieces of gear off the shelf. These weapons outclass everything else you can find in the world, minus rewards locked behind all the Naval and Assassin Contracts.
Several methods stack up to pull together this hefty sum during your first hours of play. Completing Assassin Contracts in every unlocked city stays the single most efficient method going. Looting chests scattered across accessible islands like Nassau, Havana, Cape Bonavista, and Salt Key Bank also brings in fast cash. Selling looted rum and sugar from raided merchant ships massively speeds up the grind toward this pivotal investment.
