Wizards of the Coast is working on remakes of both Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II in parallel, two of the greatest CRPGs ever made by BioWare. The icing on the cake for fans, the original co-creator of the second installment is returning to lead the project.
According to PC Gamer, which cites a source familiar with the project, Kevin Martens is back to lead development of the upcoming Baldur’s Gate II. The Canadian designer is no stranger to the saga, having already served as co-lead designer on the original game released in September 2000. He also worked on the expansion Throne of Bhaal, then racked up hits at BioWare with Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Neverwinter Nights.
After his run at BioWare, Martens joined Blizzard in 2009 to become lead content designer on Diablo III. More recently, he came back into the Wizards of the Coast fold at Archetype Entertainment, where he’s already working on Exodus, the studio’s Mass Effect-style RPG.
While PC Gamer focuses mainly on Baldur’s Gate II, the outlet notes that the 1998 original is also in the works according to its sources. The strategy makes sense given that the sequel directly follows the first game, and both could launch simultaneously. Fans of the Forgotten Realms saga would get a continuous experience, with hundreds of hours of D&D adventuring across both titles.
The Enhanced Editions developed by Beamdog are still available on modern consoles and PC, but a proper remake would allow for far more ambitious changes. No release window has been shared, and Hasbro, parent company of Wizards of the Coast, declined to comment on the matter. For reference, the Oblivion remake by Virtuos took four years of development before its surprise launch in 2025.
