Elden Ring Gets a Free Nintendo 64 Demake You Can Play Right Now

The project is called Pandemonium and it comes from BoxingBruin and a friend, two developers who took on the challenge of creating an Elden Ring-inspired game on Nintendo 64 as part of a Gamejam competition. To pull it off, they used Tiny3D, a recently released software that lets you build N64 games without having to develop your own ucode system. From there, they built everything from scratch: their own game engine, the environments, the music, and two cinematics.

The result is impressive. Pandemonium features a polished title screen, two seriously stylish cinematics, and a boss fight against a massive knight wielding a huge sword. Between the rolling dodges, the giant health bars, and the overall dark and grandiose aesthetic, the bet to recreate the Elden Ring atmosphere is fully delivered. BoxingBruin warns that the combat is more accessible than what FromSoftware usually puts out, which takes nothing away from the technical feat.

BoxingBruin didn’t just adapt an existing game. He built a complete game engine for Nintendo 64 from scratch, which represents a considerable technical challenge. More than three weeks were spent on animation work alone. The Nintendo 64 was never designed for this type of gameplay, and every technical obstacle required an original solution. The result reflects a genuine mastery of the console’s hardware.

The risk with this kind of project is well known. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco hold the rights to Elden Ring and could theoretically oppose this unofficial demake. So far, no reaction has been reported. The trend across the industry varies by publisher: some tolerate fan projects, others step in quickly. • Download -> Head to the official GitHub release page and download the latest available version
• Required emulator -> Install Ares, the only emulator compatible with Pandemonium. Available for free on PC, Mac and Linux
• Launch -> Open Ares, go to File > Load Nintendo 64 ROM and select the downloaded file
• Controller -> Connect a compatible controller before launching for the best experience. The game is also playable on keyboard
• On real Nintendo 64 -> If you own a Nintendo 64 and an EverDrive 64, transfer the file to the cartridge and play directly on original hardware
