Gothic 1 Remake Beginner’s Guide: 10 Essential Tips for the Valley of Mines

Gothic 1 Remake, developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic, drops you into the Valley of Mines with no minimap and no quest markers. The game can feel rough at first, but a few early-game mistakes will cost you dearly. Here are the essential tips to get a strong start.

Follow Diego to the Old Camp from the Start to Cash In on His Protection

Diego is the first character you meet after landing in the Colony. Ask him every available question before heading off: he explains where the Old Camp is, warns you about the dangers of the Valley of Mines, and makes it clear why lone wandering is a death sentence for a fresh prisoner. Follow him to the Old Camp instead of going solo — he’ll clean up any creatures along the road for you.

This escort phase is the perfect time to get comfortable with the controls and UI without risk. Diego drops you off at the gate of the Old Camp and reappears later as a trainer. Use your arrival to grab the first quest items, talk to Thorus at the castle entrance, and listen to the guards‘ rumors about the three factions in play.

Grab the Free Sword Near the Bridge Before Entering the Old Camp

On the road between the exchange area and the Old Camp, a free sword sits waiting just before the bridge. Head south, pass the abandoned mine area, and keep going until you reach the bridge. The sword lies on the ground next to a dead tree with a hanging corpse, on the right side of the path. Pick it up before crossing. It’s your first weapon and saves you from showing up bare-handed at the Old Camp.

This sword isn’t particularly powerful, but it’ll get you through fights against molerats and the first scavengers. Once at the Old Camp, round out your kit by talking to Fisk at the marketplace, the merchant who stocks early leather armor and mid-tier weapons.

Buy the Colony Map from Graham During Your First Hours

Gothic 1 Remake ships with no automatic minimap and no quest markers. You’ll have to buy your colony map from Graham, the merchant-cartographer based in the Old Camp. This map shows the main points of interest like the camps, the caves, and the surrounding areas. It’s essential for spotting safe routes and steering clear of dangerous zones early on.

Once you’ve grabbed the map, pop it open regularly while exploring. Memorize the bridges leading to the New Camp and the Swamp Camp so you don’t get lost. Graham also sells blank parchments useful for crafting your first spells, so keep some on hand if you’re planning a magic build later.

Make Diego Your First Trainer to Boost Strength and Dexterity

Once you’re back in the Old Camp, Diego posts up near the castle entrance and becomes your first trainer. He lets you raise your Strength or Dexterity in exchange for Learning Points. Aim for 20 Strength and 20 Dexterity by the early chapters to lock in solid damage for both melee and ranged combat.

Strength is the safer stat for a one-handed weapon build because it unlocks the requirements for stronger weapons down the line. Dexterity is the better pick for bows, crossbows, and thief-style skills. For a first run, focus on the stat tied to your main weapon rather than splitting points across both.

Learn the Lock-On and Stamina Management Before Real Fights

Combat in Gothic 1 Remake punishes mistakes hard. Learn how to use the lock-on button (Tab by default) to fix your target and make dodging easier. Early Chapter 1 enemies like molerats and scavengers are perfect for drilling the basics without dying. Keep an eye on your stamina bar: running, attacking, and dodging all drain it, and a winded character is easy meat.

Don’t pick fights against multiple enemies in the early game, since it’s the most common cause of death. If you end up surrounded, run away until only one enemy is still chasing you. Some opponents like black goblins, wolves, and bandits are way out of your league at this point. If you spot an enemy with an aggressive red indicator, walk around it and come back later with better gear.

Systematically Loot Ore Nuggets and Herbs as You Explore

Ore Nuggets are the main currency of Gothic 1 Remake and essential for paying trainers, buying armor, and unlocking skills. To stock up, head into the Old Mine northwest of the Colony, grab a pickaxe, and mine the glowing blue nodes. You can also pick up Ore Nuggets dropped on the ground by other miners with zero consequences.

Herbs are the other key resource to loot on sight. Solanaceae, Hellcaps, and meatbug meat all feed into potion crafting, cooking, and several side quests. Don’t forget to convert raw meat into grilled meat by interacting with the frying pans set up on the camp fires. These meals restore HP for free.

Use Mordrag and Baal Parvez Escorts to Farm XP Safely

Several NPCs in the Old Camp can escort you to the other camps in the Valley of Mines. Mordrag near the south gate takes you to the New Camp, while Baal Parvez at the marketplace can guide you along other routes. These escorts clean up the creatures along the way and let you loot their corpses without taking a single hit.

It’s one of the most efficient ways to farm early XP without dying to enemies beyond your level. The same trick works with guards and hunters like Ratford and Drax on the north road: stick close, let them do the dirty work, then loot the bodies for resources and experience.

Don't Spread Your Learning Points Across Too Many Skills

You earn 10 Learning Points per level. The classic rookie mistake is to scatter them across a bit of everything, while trainers demand more and more points for higher skill tiers. Pick a main path early and stick to it. The most beginner-friendly routes are Strength with one-handed combat under Scatty, or Dexterity with bow under Cavalorn.

Each trainer fills a specific niche in the Valley of Mines. Scatty teaches one-handed combat at the Old Camp arena, Fingers trains pickpocketing and lockpicking, Drax handles hunting (in exchange for 1 beer), Huno runs smithing, Torrez opens up rune magic, Cavalorn teaches bow, and Theron trains climbing. Scout the trainers tied to your main path during your first hours.

Visit All Three Camps Before Committing to a Faction

The faction choice in Chapter 2 is permanent and affects not just your gear but the trainers you can access. Before committing, take the time to scope out each camp and talk to its leaders. Here’s the breakdown of each option:

  • The Old Camp -> ruled by Gomez, ideal for warriors in heavy armor and melee combat, with access to 5th circle rune magic
  • The New Camp -> ruled by Lares, ideal for thieves, archers, and hunters, with limited rune access early on
  • The Swamp Camp -> ruled by Cor Kalom and the Brotherhood of the Sleeper, the only path to Templars and a gameplay loop built around magic and faith

Visit both other camps on top of the Old Camp before locking in your choice. This neutral early phase also lets you bank Learning Points without committing and helps you pick the route that fits your style.

Pick the Right Gear for Your Style and Faction

Armor is critical in Gothic 1 Remake because it cuts incoming damage massively. Options are limited early on, but here are the best early-game pieces depending on your playstyle:

  • Basic leather armor -> available from Fisk at the Old Camp marketplace, a solid baseline for your first hours
  • Digger’s Dress -> free from Swiney at the Free Mine south of the New Camp if you agree to join the Scrapers
  • Guard armor -> worn by the guards of the Old Camp, available after joining Gomez‘s faction
  • Mercenary outfit -> offered by Lares‘ crew at the New Camp, versatile for both combat and stealth
  • Novice robe -> handed out at the Swamp Camp to the apprentices of the Brotherhood of the Sleeper

Never wear armor that’s too heavy for your Strength: it’ll slow your movement and drain your stamina in fights. Test a few options before locking in your setup for Chapter 2.
