Indie developer CryZENx has officially called time on his 10-year fan remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine 5. The project stood as one of the most ambitious fan tributes to Nintendo’s classic adventure.
CryZENx kicked off his fan remake back in 2015. The goal was to rebuild Link‘s entire journey from the ground up in Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. Far more than a quick port, the project shipped with photorealistic visuals, dynamic lighting, and a modernized camera. CryZENx dropped fresh playable demos on his Patreon at regular intervals, drawing a dedicated community of Nintendo fans.
All previous demos remain available for download through Patreon. The most polished version packs a save system and runs about 1.5 hours of gameplay. Players can clear the 1st dungeon and reach Kakariko Village. Each release marks a technical milestone in the project’s growth, from the early prototype to the latest set pieces.
CryZENx plans to drop a closing video showing a full playthrough of chapters 2 and 3 of the fan remake. This final post will mark the official end of the project and pay tribute to 10 years of work. The existing content will stay accessible indefinitely for Patreon supporters.
The official announcement of an Ocarina of Time remake coming to Nintendo Switch 2 by Nintendo is what drove the decision. CryZENx explains he no longer saw a reason to keep an alternative project alive once the official version takes over. The developer would rather close the chapter cleanly than push a product set to be overshadowed.
The Japanese studio, however, never sent a cease and desist or a takedown request to the developer throughout the entire life of the project. No legal action came alongside the announcement of the official remake. This absence of pressure stands in stark contrast to other recent fan projects. AM2R and the Super Mario 64 PC ports got pulled abruptly by Nintendo.
Looking ahead, CryZENx is already eyeing another classic to tackle in Unreal Engine 5. A recent poll run by the developer puts The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on top with 52% of the votes. Other contenders include The Minish Cap, Donkey Kong 64, MDK, Turok, and Sonic Adventure 2. No final pick has been announced publicly yet.
