The paint system in Pokémon Pokopia, the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive from The Pokémon Company, runs on Smearguru and 18 unlockable paint colors. Here’s the full breakdown to craft every color, mix Paint Balloons, and slap patterns on more than 200 items across the game.
The paint system in Pokémon Pokopia isn’t just slapping a fresh coat on a chair. It runs on 3 layers. A central NPC, Smearguru, accepts your custom orders. A berry-based crafting chain produces the paint. Paint Balloons let you throw color straight onto whatever you want to recolor. The full customization toolkit covers more than 200 items across the game, from furniture to walls to roofs and fences.
To reach Smearguru, you first need to make it to Bleak Beach. The gate between Withered Wasteland and Bleak Beach only opens once you hit Great Trainer status. Head to the north side of Bleak Beach and you’ll find the artistic Smeargle painting at an easel under a gazebo.
Smearguru kicks off a short quest. He asks for paint powder made by crushing a Leppa Berry, which means a Pokémon with the Crush specialty. Onix stays the most common pick since most players have already befriended an Onix during the Withered Wasteland quests. Steelix, Conkeldurr, Tyranitar, Metagross, Tyrantrum, and Aurorus all work too.
Each of the 8 base paint colors comes from a single recipe in Pokémon Pokopia. Feed a berry to a Pokémon with the Crush specialty:
Black and White paint stay rare in the early game. The reliable shortcut is to push Withered Wasteland‘s Environment Level to 10. The shop then carries unlimited Black and White paint.
The 10 extra paint colors in the system unlock by mixing 2 base Paint Balloons:
The full lineup tops out at 18 different balloons. Paint Balloons craft at any workbench from paints you already own. They also pop up at the shop when stock allows.
Smearguru holds a selection of patterns from the jump. The more interesting unlock path runs through Vespiquen in Withered Wasteland. The items you get back when you trade Honey with her sometimes come stamped with printed patterns.
Bringing those patterned items back to Smearguru at Bleak Beach adds those patterns to your customization library. The same process works for patterned items bought from the shop. Patterns mostly apply to fabric items like couches, cushions, and rugs.
The paint system rewards players who run multiple systems at once. Berry farming feeds paint crafting, which feeds balloon production. The Vespiquen trades unlock the pattern library on a separate track. The whole customization toolkit opens up gradually rather than all at once.
