Before Nintendo Pulls It: How to Download and Play This Free Animal Crossing Demake on PC

What if Animal Crossing had existed on Game Boy Color back in 1998? Richter Wilker, a homebrew developer, decided to answer that question with a free demake. The catch: with Nintendo’s track record on fan projects, the download window could close at any moment.

Animal Forest GB Folk, the demake nobody asked for but everyone needed

The project is called Animal Forest GB Folk and it comes from Richter Wilker, a homebrew developer who publishes his creations on itch.io. This demake transforms Animal Crossing into a Game Boy Color game with remarkable faithfulness to the original series’ spirit. The first version was released on February 16, 2026 and the developer confirmed having integrated all of the initially planned content with additional bonuses. Some planned mini-games haven’t been developed yet but a future update remains a possibility.

Animal Forest GB Folk features villages you can explore and where you can build friendships. Time-based events, festivals and mini-games are present and faithfully replicate the gameplay of the full series. You can pick fruit, dig for treasure and fish in streams. It’s exactly what an Animal Crossing game on Game Boy Color should have been if Nintendo had bothered to develop it back then. The result is jaw-dropping, and the itch.io community wasn’t fooled, with enthusiastic comments piling up since launch.

Richter Wilker, a homebrew developer who masters retro console limitations

Richter Wilker is no stranger to the homebrew scene. His itch.io profile lists about a dozen projects, including several demakes of iconic franchises adapted for classic handheld consoles. He has mastered the technical constraints of old consoles and manages to recreate the essence of a modern game within the extreme limits of 90s hardware. This work of adaptation is precisely what makes his projects so impressive. Turning Animal Crossing into a Game Boy Color game requires not only recreating the graphics in a maximum of 8 colors, but also completely rethinking the interface, the menus and the mechanics to make them fit into a few kilobytes of memory.

The usual risk with this kind of homebrew project is well known. Nintendo is one of the most aggressive publishers when it comes to taking down unofficial projects that use its IP. Animal Forest GB Folk directly uses the Animal Crossing intellectual property. That doesn’t mean the game will be pulled tomorrow, but it does mean the download window could close at any moment. If the project interests you, now is the time to act.

How to download and play this free Animal Crossing demake on Game Boy Color

The game is entirely free and available on PC via itch.io. Here’s how to get it:

  • ROM file -> Download the .gb file available on the project page
  • Recommended emulator -> Install mGBA, the most accurate and compatible Game Boy emulator available for free on PC, Mac and Linux

  • Controller -> Connect a compatible controller before launching for the best experience. The game is also playable on keyboard
