God of War Laufey dropped at Sony’s State of Play on June 2, 2026 with a meaty 20-minute gameplay reveal, but Santa Monica Studio still hasn’t pinned down a release date. 2 of the industry’s most trusted leakers just changed that conversation.
Industry leaker NateTheHate, well-known in gaming circles for his accuracy on Sony scoops, dropped a fresh update on X on June 13, 2026. When a user asked whether the game could possibly launch in 2026 given the marketing push, his reply was straightforward: « Last I heard the target was first half 2027. Could change but that was a hope at one point. » He had already floated the same window in a separate June 4, 2026 post, which suggests his internal sources at Santa Monica Studio have not shifted their thinking.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, considered one of the most reliable journalists for Sony-related scoops, indirectly backed up that window on BlueSky. When asked whether the game might slip to 2028, Schreier shut down the idea with a flat « definitely not, » and added that Laufey is not « years away » from launching. The fact that 2 unrelated sources both land on the same first-half-2027 target gives the rumor real weight.
Santa Monica Studio’s release history backs up the rumor. God of War (2018) shipped in April 2018, God of War Ragnarök in November 2022, and the studio has historically favored a March-April window for its biggest releases. With Laufey reportedly in development for 5 to 6 years now and a polished 20-minute gameplay slice already shown off, the project sounds far enough along to realistically aim for spring 2027. That timeline still gives the team close to a year of polish, balance passes, and final bug-fixing before launch.
The late-2026 release calendar is another reason 2027 makes sense for Sony. Grand Theft Auto VI is set to dominate marketing budgets and gaming conversations across every platform that holiday season. Dropping Laufey into that Christmas traffic jam would be a high-risk move for Sony, who would rather let the Rockstar storm pass before deploying its biggest PS5 exclusive. A March-April 2027 window lets Santa Monica grab full media attention without competing head-on with the biggest open-world launch of the decade.
For players in Western markets, the spring 2027 window also makes financial sense. It gives buyers time to wrap up their late-2026 purchases, chip away at their backlog, then dive into Faye’s 25 to 35-hour adventure when it lands. The PS5 is in full technical maturity by then with a catalog of fewer but more ambitious exclusives, and spring releases tend to line up nicely with school holidays and long weekends across most of the West.
On the confirmed side, Sony Interactive Entertainment has positioned God of War Laufey as the next mainline entry in the franchise, developed by Santa Monica Studio under Corey Barlog and shipping exclusively on PS5. Players take control of Faye, wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, who wakes up inside the Everywhen, a divine afterlife realm. This marks the first time in the series that Santa Monica has built an entire game around Faye as a playable protagonist, a major shift after years of Kratos and Atreus carrying the narrative.
The combat system is reportedly faster and more aerial than Ragnarök’s, with heavy emphasis on magical abilities that let Faye reshape the environment mid-fight: freezing rivers, dropping trees, and reshaping terrain on the fly. The art direction also blends Norse mythology with hints of other mythological traditions, with several visual cues from the trailer pointing toward potential Egyptian influences. That kind of mythological crossover opens up biomes and creature designs the series has never explored before.
On the open side, plenty of question marks remain. The PlayStation Store listing currently shows a « to be determined » release window with no special editions or PC version announced, and viewers noticed that no platform logos appeared at the end of the State of Play trailer, which has sparked speculation about a possible PS6 version. To lock in the first-half-2027 window for sure, watch the upcoming State of Plays and December’s Game Awards, which typically host the official date drop and pre-order opening for Sony’s biggest games.
