Faye was supposed to be the big reveal of PlayStation‘s latest State of Play. Instead, it’s her unlikely companion, a blue gelatinous cosmic cube, that ran away with the show during Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Laufey reveal.
The character is named Phranque, pronounced « Frangk » or « Frank » for short, and Sony officially describes him as « a curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition ». This blue gelatinous creature with a jolly vibe sticks with Faye from the moment she wakes up in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods that serves as the game’s backdrop. Jack Quaid voices the character, having been recently seen in The Boys and Novocaine, and already familiar to Star Trek: Lower Decks fans as Brad Boimler. The wildest part of the reveal, Jack Quaid didn’t just lend his voice to the cube, he also did the motion capture himself in a mocap suit, a move that instantly set the internet on fire.
Behind the scenes, Phranque is more than just a gimmick. Cory Barlog, Head of Creative at Santa Monica Studio, told IGN that the cube is « one of the most important parts of it », while Ariel Lawrence, the game’s director, shared her hope that « everybody has feelings for some ribbons and a jellied cube » by the end of the game. On the fan side, the debate is already running wild on forums like ResetEra, where memes are flying around the Getting Phranque with Boimler hashtag, a nod to Lower Decks fans. Some players are all in on Santa Monica Studio‘s bold call to drop such a quirky companion into the saga, while others see it as a tonal misstep that clashes with the brutal, solemn tone the franchise has carried since the 2018 God of War.
