30 Years On, The Nintendo 64 Is Still Gaming’s Greatest Underdog Story

There’s something strange about the Nintendo 64. The console behind Super Mario 64 launched on June 23, 1996, and got buried in sales by Sony’s PlayStation. 30 years later, it’s still worshipped as one of the most beloved consoles in gaming history.

Inside The N64's Tiny 1996 Launch Lineup That Changed Gaming Forever

The Japanese launch on June 23, 1996 is one of the most barebones in console history. Just 3 games hit store shelves on Day One. Super Mario 64 takes the spotlight alongside Pilotwings 64 and Saikyō Habu Shōgi, a Japan-only shogi sim. Even with that skeletal lineup, the N64 moves 300,000 units in its 1st day.

The Japanese marketing campaign nailed Nintendo‘s ambition. The slogan « The games change. The 64 changes everything. » sells the promise of a 3D revolution. Behind the scenes, Nintendo teamed up with Silicon Graphics, the studio behind Jurassic Park’s visual effects, to deliver that technological jump. The whole project went by the code name Project Reality during development.

The rest of the world waits months for its turn. The United States gets the N64 on September 29, 1996, 3 months behind Japan. Europe holds out until March 1, 1997 for its release date. France ends up last, on September 1, 1997, thanks to logistics headaches at Nintendo France.

Sony's PlayStation Buried The Nintendo 64 In The 1990s Console War

The cartridge call was Nintendo‘s 1st big mistake. Rivals PlayStation and Saturn jumped on CD-ROM, which was cheaper to make and packed way more storage. Third-party developers ran to Sony in droves. Squaresoft bailed on Nintendo after years together and put Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation in 1997.

Releases trickled out at a glacial pace and the catalog felt half-empty. First-party hits couldn’t carry the whole library on their own. Meanwhile, PlayStation racked up hundreds of third-party titles across every genre, from JRPGs to racers to horror, you name it. The final scoreboard is brutal. Nintendo moves roughly 30 million N64s while Sony‘s PlayStation crosses 100 million units.

The commercial picture varies wildly by region. The United States alone makes up 16 million sales, which is more than half the worldwide total. Japan never tops 5.5 million units sold, a disappointing run given how high expectations started. Europe and France post even softer numbers, dragged down by late releases and inflated game prices.

What Makes A Commercial Loser One Of Gaming's Most Worshipped Consoles?

The commercial war was over, but the cultural one was just starting. Super Mario 64 straight-up invented the modern 3D platformer, anchored by the genre-defining analog stick. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, dropped in 1998, still sits at the top of countless « greatest games ever » lists. GoldenEye 007 took console FPS multiplayer mainstream and inspired a whole generation of split-screen shooter fans.

The Super Mario 64 saga keeps writing itself 30 years after launch. The speedrun community took the game over in the early 2000s. Records keep tumbling across iconic runs like 120 stars, 70 stars, and 16 stars. YouTuber Pannenkoek2012 breaks down absurd technical concepts like parallel universes for millions of viewers. Modders crank out ROM hacks like Super Mario Star Road and Last Impact. Easter eggs like the « L is real 2401 » carving on Peach’s statue have powered internet theories for 25 years. The full source code decompilation in 2019 even produced a native PC port that fans spread around before Nintendo pulled the plug.

The 4-port built-in controller hookup turned the N64 into the ultimate party box with Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, and Mario Party. Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day round out a first-party catalog few consoles have ever matched. 30 years on, the console gets a new chapter. The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service streams roughly 30 N64 titles to subscribers. The Funtastic Series with its translucent shells stays at the top of collector wishlists.
