Modern Warfare 4 drops on October 23, 2026 with a brand-new Korean conflict, the return of DMZ, 12 multiplayer maps and a historic landing on Nintendo Switch 2. Here are all the answers to the questions you’re asking before release.
Modern Warfare 4 is the new annual FPS from Activision developed by Infinity Ward. The studio is backed by Beenox, High Moon Studios, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch and several internal Activision teams. The title extends the Modern Warfare sub-series launched in 2019 and closes several major storylines around Captain Price and the Task Force 141. The trailer unveiled on May 28, 2026 depicts a full-scale invasion of South Korea by North Korea under the rule of a new fictional Supreme Leader.
Modern Warfare 4 releases worldwide on October 23, 2026. The date was confirmed by Activision and Infinity Ward during the official reveal on May 28, 2026. A follow-up showcase is planned during the State of Play on June 2, 2026. Pre-orders are already live across all major storefronts, with a 10% loyalty discount on the Vault Edition for players who owned any Call of Duty title since 2019.
Modern Warfare 4 lands on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox App) and Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first time since Ghosts on Wii U that a Call of Duty has shipped on a Nintendo console, ending more than 10 years of absence. The Switch 2 version supports full crossplay with PC, PlayStation and Xbox players, with no feature gap compared to the other platforms. Modern Warfare 4 is also the first entry in the sub-series to fully skip last-gen, leaving PS4 and Xbox One behind.
Modern Warfare 4 debuts the brand-new IW 10 engine built in-house by Infinity Ward. It replaces the IW 9.0 engine that's been running the franchise since Modern Warfare II in 2022. According to dataminers and trusted leakers like TheGhostOfHope, Infinity Ward's goal is to recapture the visual fidelity delivered by Modern Warfare 2019 while addressing community feedback on current-gen graphics. The new engine also powers a fully redesigned weapon system called Ballistic Authority, which unifies aim precision, weapon handling, realistic audio propagation, bullet physics and enhanced visibility.
The Modern Warfare 4 campaign unfolds primarily on the Korean Peninsula. The storyline centers on a massive invasion of South Korea by North Korea. Players step into the boots of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier thrown into live combat for the first time alongside his squad. On the other side of the world, Captain Price wages a personal war from the shadows. He's cut off from his Task Force 141 and hunts the real forces behind the invasion. Missions take players from Korean trench warfare to New York City, Paris and Mumbai. These settings include SAS night raids and urban assaults to reclaim occupied territory. Infinity Ward confirms the campaign can be played fully offline and paused at any time.
The Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer leans into fluid movement and an improved mantle system, while skipping the Omnimovement introduced in Black Ops 6. The game ships with 12 6v6 maps at launch, a Gunfight mode and Big War maps for large-scale infantry and vehicle combat. A brand-new experience called Kill Block drops players into a live-fire training facility where the arena reshapes between every round. The Pick-3 Perk system makes a comeback with Ninja in the lineup, alongside the classic Prestige, map voting, red dots on the minimap and the Studio mode.
DMZ is the third official mode of Modern Warfare 4 after being absent since Modern Warfare 3. It's an extraction shooter inspired by Escape from Tarkov where squads have to grab loot and extract alive from a conflict zone. Players can drop in solo or in a squad against other players and AI enemies. Infinity Ward confirms the arrival of dynamic weather with rain, snow and fog, shifting military objectives and moving enemy patrols. A successful extraction lets you keep your gear, while getting taken out means losing everything.
Modern Warfare 4 is led by Infinity Ward, the historic creator of the Modern Warfare sub-series. The studio is backed by a massive lineup of Activision partners. The list includes Activision Central Design, Activision Central Technology, Activision QA, Activision Shanghai, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch. This collaboration powers the multiplatform rollout including the Switch 2 version, with Beenox notably supporting the Nintendo port.
Activision hasn't officially shared the retail price for Modern Warfare 4 yet. The tag will likely match the previous installments of the sub-series, around $69.99 for the standard edition on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version may be priced differently following Nintendo's usual policy. Vault or Deluxe editions are also expected with bonus cosmetics, exclusive Operators and access to premium weapon packs.
