Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic ship Gothic 1 Remake today, June 5, 2026, on PC via Steam and GOG, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. More than 25 years after the 2001 original from Piranha Bytes, here are the answers to every question you might have before pulling the trigger.
Gothic 1 Remake is an open-world action RPG developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic. It's a full ground-up remake of the original Gothic released in 2001 by German studio Piranha Bytes, widely regarded as one of the cult European RPGs of the early 2000s. The game has been rebuilt from scratch on Unreal Engine 5 with a modernized combat system while keeping the atmosphere, story, and universe of the original intact.
Gothic 1 Remake launches on June 5, 2026, worldwide with a simultaneous global rollout. The initial release window announced was "early 2026" before THQ Nordic locked in the exact date during a dedicated trailer in February 2026. Pre-orders are open on Steam, GOG, the PlayStation Store, and the Xbox Store.
Gothic 1 Remake is available on PC via Steam and GOG, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S starting June 5, 2026. No Nintendo Switch 2 version is planned at this time, with THQ Nordic confirming the hybrid console isn't part of the studio's current plans. PS4 and Xbox One versions aren't planned either.
The PC Standard Edition is priced at $49.99 (€49.99) on Steam and GOG with the bonus soundtrack composed by Kai Rosenkranz, the original game's composer. The console version is priced at $59.99 (€59.99) on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and bundles Gothic Classic, meaning the 2001 original ported to modern consoles for the first time. A Collector's Edition is also available in Europe with leather-bound themed goodies.
Gothic 1 Remake is a 100% single-player experience with no multiplayer or co-op modes. The main campaign's playtime mirrors the original game, roughly 25 to 30 hours to wrap up the main adventure and more for those exploring every side quest and corner of the world rebuilt by Alkimia Interactive.
The story unfolds in the Kingdom of Myrtana, invaded by a horde of orcs threatening the crown. To forge magical weapons against the invader, King Rhobar II sends every prisoner in the kingdom to the Khorinis mines to extract rare magic ore. To stop them from escaping, the kingdom's mages cast a magical barrier around the valley. But the spell goes sideways and the barrier also traps the guards inside, turning the penal colony into an isolated society ruled by the prisoners themselves. You play as the Nameless Hero, thrown into this valley for a reason that gradually reveals itself.
The gameplay leans on the fundamentals of classic action RPGs with a third-person view, a modernized melee and ranged combat system, and new movement abilities that weren't in the original. The faction system stays central: you pick a side from the valley's three prisoner groups (Old Camp, New Camp, Sect) to push the main storyline forward. NPC behaviors have been expanded with more complex routines, and major story events now trigger visible changes in the environment and the daily lives of the characters.
Yes, Alkimia Interactive claims a faithful approach to the source material while modernizing the technical side. The main narrative stays untouched, the factions are preserved, the Nameless Hero is still a blank slate at the start, and iconic zones like the Valley of Mines and the Old Camp have been rebuilt with a level of detail that long-time fans praised in the previews. Several hours of cut content from the original game have also been folded back into the remake, including quests and dialogues that never shipped in 2001.
Yes. The free Nyras Prologue demo is available on PC (Steam and GOG), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It runs about an hour with the character Nyras and lets you test the main mechanics before pulling the trigger on the full version. Unlike most demos, Nyras Prologue will stay available after the full game launches for players still on the fence.
The recommended setup for Gothic 1 Remake is an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X with an RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT and 16 GB of RAM. The minimum setup calls for an Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 with a GTX 1660 Super or RX 5600 XT and 12 GB of RAM. The game runs on Windows 10 64-bit minimum and demands roughly 80 GB of disk space. Unreal Engine 5 being heavy, an NVMe SSD is strongly recommended for a smooth experience.
Early previews and impressions from the gaming press lean majority positive. PC Gamer praises a "visual glow-up" that doesn't hide the "scrappy eurojank RPG" identity the game owns, which is welcome fidelity to the original spirit. The Gothic community has welcomed the trailers with rare enthusiasm, many calling it a "return home" after the closure of Piranha Bytes. Minor critiques touch on technical aspects typical of mid-budget productions and the deliberately slow pacing that stays faithful to the original.
