Summer Game Fest 2026 week kicks off this Tuesday, June 2 with an oversized State of Play from Sony. Over 60 minutes of announcements are on the menu for PlayStation 5, headlined by the highly anticipated return of Marvel’s Wolverine.
The State of Play airs on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at 5 PM EDT / 2 PM PDT, broadcast live on PlayStation‘s official YouTube and Twitch channels. The showcase will run for over 60 minutes, well above the usual 20 to 40 minute average of standard State of Play presentations. A little novelty on the distribution side, Sony is also screening this edition in several Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the United States, a first in years for the brand looking to bring an event feel back to its showcases.
This presentation marks above all the kickoff of Summer Game Fest 2026 week, the biggest summer gaming gathering since the demise of E3. Sony is the first of the three major platform holders to step up this week, followed by the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 7, and the usual uncertainty over at Nintendo. The main Summer Game Fest conference hosted by Geoff Keighley runs from June 5 to 8, with its share of multi-publisher announcements.
The only officially confirmed announcement from Sony so far is Marvel’s Wolverine, the AAA developed by Insomniac Games. The studio behind both Marvel’s Spider-Man entries showed only one gameplay trailer at the September 2025 State of Play, where Liam McIntyre was confirmed in the role of Logan via performance capture. This new presentation should push things even further on combat mechanics, the character’s signature healing factor, and the universe in which Wolverine travels between Japan, Madripoor, and Canada.
The anticipation around this project is massive. Insomniac Games is coming off two huge critical and commercial successes with Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequel, and Marvel’s Wolverine has to prove the studio’s craft on a radically different character, darker and more brutal. The massive leaks from 2023 following the ransomware attack on the studio already confirmed the project’s ambition, rated M for an unapologetically adult tone. Three months out from the September 15, 2026 release, this State of Play is therefore the commercial moment of truth to turn five years of waiting into viral hype and drive pre-orders in droves.
Several insiders point to a Sony Santa Monica announcement on the next God of War, a spin-off that could put Faye in the protagonist role. Intergalactic: The Heretic Project, the new Naughty Dog IP unveiled in late 2024, could also make a return with a real gameplay glimpse. Other titles like Phantom Blade Zero or Resident Evil Requiem are mentioned in the leaks, the first having a release scheduled for September 8, 2026, and therefore an obvious need for visibility before its launch.
On the third-party side, all eyes turn to Japanese publishers with Square Enix, Capcom, and FromSoftware regularly cited as potential partners. Previous State of Play events have also made a habit of slipping a surprise announcement in at the end of the program, whether it’s an unexpected remake, a new IP, or a PlayStation exclusive partnership on a major multi-platform title. With over 60 minutes on the clock, Sony has plenty of room to multiply reveals and slot in a few secondary announcements between the headliners.
