Call of Duty Movie Officially Set In The Modern Warfare Universe

Director Peter Berg took the stage during the Call of Duty in Culture panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City on July 18, 2026. The American filmmaker known for Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon jumped at the chance to lock in the movie’s release for June 30, 2028. This launch date was actually already set by Paramount back in April during CinemaCon. The pick lines up with the 25th anniversary of the original Call of Duty from 2003.

Berg also officially confirmed the choice to plant the feature film squarely in the Modern Warfare universe of the Call of Duty franchise. This iconic sub-series kicked off in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and left a mark on an entire generation of FPS players. The legendary characters Captain John Price and Simon Ghost Riley from Task Force 141 all come from this beloved corner of the franchise. Berg kept every other plot detail firmly under wraps at this stage.

The creative team brings together Peter Berg on directing and co-writing duties alongside Taylor Sheridan. The latter is the creator of the hit series Yellowstone and Landman. David Glasser of 101 Studios also joins the production team next to Paramount and Activision. The film was first announced back in September 2025 by Paramount‘s new owner Skydance. This multiyear deal leaves the door wide open for expansion across film and TV.

This adaptation carries massive commercial stakes for Paramount which taps into the franchise’s staggering 400 million copies sold since the original launch in 2003. The studio holds a multiyear deal with Activision that clears the runway for movie and TV expansion well beyond this first feature. Paramount clearly bets on the same Hollywood franchise playbook that turned its Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation into a theatrical and streaming juggernaut.

The project already stirred heated reactions across the gaming community for several editorial reasons. Co-writer Peter Berg had once trashed Call of Duty players as « weak » and « pathetic » in a controversial statement. This past take from 2013 resurfaced right after his hire by Paramount. Longtime fans also flagged Paramount‘s decision to turn down Steven Spielberg who had shown genuine interest in helming the adaptation.
